TOPSHOP LAUNCH ARCHIVE COLLECTION

With the 1970’s sweeping into our wardrobes again this summer, high street hero, Topshop have decided not to simply throw some tassles and mirrored embellishment on their garments – they’re digging out their best pieces and re-working them in a new archive collection. After discovering some original pieces in a charity shop, creative director Kate Phelan saw a fantastic opportunity to re-visit Topshop’s greatest hits. The collection is a time warp of vinyl skirts, pressed blazers, silver lame and bleached denim as well as a pair of indigo denim jeans inspired by an old Debbie Harry poster.

CELEBRATE DEBBIE HARRY’S STYLE WITH NEW BOOK AND EXHIBITION

The 1980’s isn’t usually an era we associate with iconic fashion. Embarrassing shoulder pads, loud prints and shiny lycra teamed with massive perms and blue eye-shadow doesn’t make for a very stylish revival. However, there is one exception to the rule and that is Debbie Harry. Her take on feminine punk combined with her peroxide blonde hair and killer cheekbones made her a pin-up for the time. But above all, her cutting edge style is one that has been reinvented again and again, from the street to the catwalk.

Just when we thought we’d seen every image of the Blondie front woman, her bandmate and former boyfriend, Chris Stein has compiled a book containing imagery spanning 40 years of Harry’s life and career. To coincide with the launch, Somerset House will also be hosting an exhibition of Harry’s style, debuting photographs from her time on stage and in private in never-been-seen before shots.
