When it came to which islands to “hop” I did a lot of research and actually didn’t find much. Dubrovnik’s been on travellers radars for some time but the lesser known islands are really up and coming. One island that kept popping up everywhere I looked was Hvar. Dubbed the “Ibiza of Croatia” it’s where the rich and famous dock their super yachts and party until the early hours (and they aren’t quiet about it!) Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Tom Cruise and Prince Harry have all been spotted on the island over the last few years so naturally it immediately became top of our island list.
We caught the ferry from Split and after 2 hours docked in the tiny ferry port. Just half an hours drive away (beware of the illegal “taxis”) we rocked up in the main cobbled square and were beyond excited! Tiny boutiques, post offices and outdoor cafes lined the streets that surrounded the harbour. We arrived early June with the town buzzing with people but locals said this was quiet and August is when every where’s rammed and the boats fill the port. Pretty, yes but it’s obvious that word’s got out as the island’s filled with stag do’s, hen dos and plenty of Brits Abroad. With temperatures in the early 30’s I’d suggest the earlier you go, the more of a peaceful stay you’ll have (if that’s what you want!)
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
BEWARE OF THE SEA URCHINS
I found this out the hard way and STILL have the needles in my toe! They line the rocks in the sea but unlike most, aren’t poisonous. Make sure you take the steps into the sea and if you stand on one, soak in vinegar and resist the temptation to tweezer.
BRING EAR PLUGS
Wherever you are the evenings will be loud until the early hours of the morning
WEAR FLIP FLOPS IN THE SEA
Sandy beaches are few and far between in Croatia but no less beautiful. It’s quite painful walking in so try to protect your tootsies.
