Writing for a health and fitness magazine, it’s easy to become swept away with the latest fitness fad or health study but I love to keep an open-mind and absorb as much knowledge and advice that comes across my desk. But when I found out there was a supplement that was created by a nutritionist and one of the most famous supermodels of our time, I must admit, I was already sold. But reading on, I discovered that Elle Macpherson’s Super Elixir product packed more of a health punch than I had previously thought. Created with Dr Simone, a a PhD in oxidative stress and trained nutritionist, the Super Elixir is becoming a cult product and is even a staple in fellow models and health enthusiasts, Miranda Kerr and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s diets. So I signed up and agreed to give it a go, expecting to see an Elle-style body in 5-10 days. Easy, right?

When the super-sleek brown paper bag with the Super Elixir logo arrived, I had already read-up on what to expect and what I’d be consuming. According to the website “THE SUPER ELIXIR™ is designed to support your healthy nutrition at a cellular level and optimise the functioning of all 11 systems of the human body. When combining THE SUPER ELIXIR™ with a balanced diet and exercise, people have experienced increased energy levels and many other benefits associated with a more alkaline state.” Ah, alkaline. I’ve heard a lot about this over the last year and I must say, I’m intrigued. When I looked over the ingredients of this green powder they went something like this:

  • Organic Barley Grass
  • Pineapple
  • Apple
  • Goji Berry
  • Beetroot
  • Lime
  • Acai
  • Pomegranate
  • Papaya
  • Green Tea Extract
  • Dandelion Leaves Extract
  • Shitake and Mitake Mushroom Extract
  • Aloe Vera
  • Milk Thistle Extract
  • And a lot of other minerals I can’t pronounce!

Some pretty healthy ingredients, do you think? Although you can sprinkle your two teaspoons of powder over salads or in yoghurt, I opted for the safe option and mixed it in with a small bottle of water. It soon turned a very unappetising shade of green with black flecks (the herbs) giving it the appearance of, well, a pond. Taking a few hesitant swigs and I was pleasantly surprised. Although it didn’t taste of much, the subtle sweet after-taste of pineapples and apples was a welcome addition.

I’m now on day 4 of my daily supplement and I can already see the benefits. I feel instantly more alert, awake and sharp (I’m whizzing through my features!) my digestion is finely tuned and I no longer crave my 11 am and 3 pm snacks. I don’t feel full but I feel satisfied and generally a lot healthier. Perhaps it’s because drinking a super-healthy drink followed by a packet of crisps just feels so wrong, either way I feel lighter and energized, even after a long, hard day. Having now tried it, I will definitely be replenishing my supply once it runs out to give me an extra boost of wellness. I may not have a physique worthy of Miss Macpherson but I sure as hell feel more energized to hit the gym tonight!

Super Elixir products range from £36 for 150g to £149 for the starter kit
